CONSTRUCTION CLIMATE CALORIE COUNTER
By: Logan Nagel
Clean, low-carbon building projects are much easier when construction companies know the exact environmental impact of their every brick, pipe, and 2x4. That’s why Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are so important. These validated disclosures add transparency and clarity to the impacts of all sorts of products, but they can be time-consuming and expensive to produce—$13,000 to $41,000 each, according to one study.
That’s where Emidat comes in. The German startup provides a SaaS platform that generates EPDs for construction products faster and at a lower cost than the traditional route of manually developing a Life Cycle Assessment and then disclosing the findings in a specific format. The timing is right. Regulations such as the Construction Products Regulation in the EU and the Inflation Reduction Act in the USA are increasingly emphasizing EPDs. This kind of information will give vastly more utility to BIM modeling, allowing builders to granularly track and optimize the impacts of their projects. In turn, this will allow subsequent layers of tools to further optimize design, construction, and procurement. Surprise surprise, Emidat sees themselves as providing this foundation of knowledge for the entire construction value chain. With over 150,000 EPDs generated so far, they are onto something.
