WINDOW TO THE (CLIMATE) GOAL
By: Logan Nagel
Launched at MIT, Aeroshield is a Massachusetts-based startup developing home insulation for windows. Glass panels are difficult to insulate due to their thin dimensions and necessary transparency—no piping fiberglass into your kitchen windows. Aeroshield’s approach uses aerogel, a super lightweight, translucent type of material with exceptional heat insulation properties. Aerogels are being considered for uses like insulation in space suits, but Aeroshield’s more earthly application coats the interior of window panels with a thin layer of aerogel that the company says can improve energy performance by up to 65%.
