GEM HIGHLIGHT
GEM WALKS THE CAMINO
By: Drew Meyers
On Sunday, we arrived at the breathtaking cathedral in Santiago de Compostela to conclude the GEM Walks the Camino international excursion. We were among "pilgrims" from across the world: Koreans, Americans, Chinese, and Mexicans celebrating completion of the journey. The Camino experience is for people from all walks of life.

Over the course of the last six days, we spent 40 hours and 30 minutes walking 116.2 kilometers from Sarria to Santiago de Compostela. My new Hoka's (thanks Nate Smoyer for the recommendation) and socks held up wonderfully. Yes, my feet are incredibly sore, but only one blister emerging is beyond a win in my book. Thank you to Jane Hood, Elaine Brown, Michael Barnes, Karen K Burns, Natasha Terinova, and Eddie Berenbaum for your participation in what was a magical experience. Plus, our amazing guide Ria...the queen of the Camino. And, of course, to Heather Harmon for the inspiration and planning help to make this trip a reality.
Among the highlights of the six day experience was breakfast, lunch, and dinner as a group everyday. The genuine, raw, personal conversations with absolutely zero agenda was beyond refreshing. It was about as far from "robots walking the Camino" as you can get.
A core part of a successful GEM dinner experience is a personal sharing prompt to "get you beyond the cocktail bullsh*t you get everywhere else." Our sharing prompt at lunch today was, "when have you felt the most free?"
For me, two trips immediately came to mind. In 2010, my friend and I hiked Kilimanjaro as part of spending a month in Kenya/Tanzania. That trek was five days of zero internet access in the heart of Africa. Just me and my thoughts for days on end. The other was my 2014 journey to Cuba with two friends. While that trip wasn't zero internet, it was close to zero connectivity for five days in a time warp to the 1950s.
Being connected 24/7 often feels like living with handcuffs, stifling freedom and creativity. So...the takeaway is that getting completely off the computer every now and then will free your mind. I highly recommend the reset.
This was the first, but not the last, international excursion curated for the GEM community. If you're interested in a future "GEM Walks the Camino" journey, or another similar trek, apply today.
